Jeffrey Lewis’ Gas Man Cometh – “When Power is Threatened Life is Cheap”

In True nature of the State on March 16, 2012 at 1:02 am

Do you think what happened in Communist Russia or Nazis Germany can happen in America today? If you don’t think so I urge you to listen to”GasMan Cometh” performed by Jeffrey Lewis.

Jeffrey Lewis is an amazing singer/songwriter and comic book artist. I saw his show last week at The Earl in Atlanta and it blew me away. His lyrics are incredible. I first started listening to him because of his song “Time Trade”. Which by the way if you haven’t heard I encourage you to get it on ITUNES or Pandora it. The song is about how Time takes so much away but there is a way to offer time a trade. He talks about doing something that takes a long time that you can get better at because that in the end is all that time leaves you. It’s a real motivating song that helped to reorient my view of myself and the world at the time I heard it. And when my perspective is becoming skewed I listen to that song and it is amazing how it brings me back to focusing on what I love to do and that is to read and write about Liberty and Living life.

Now you may be wondering what Time Trade has to do with “Gas Man Cometh”. Well I bought the song on Itunes and also made a Jeffrey Lewis Channel on Pandora and one day I was listening to it and the song “Gas Man Cometh” came on. It blew me away. .It is a cover of a Crass song and it was written in the context of English oppression of the Irish. The Band Crass is an anarcho-punk band from the 1970’s. How cool is that? I didn’t even know such a thing existed. They used aggressive music to spread a message of Pacifism. Which I can totally get behind.

The song’s basis is that, what happened in Nazis Germany with the Gas Chambers can happen in the present. It is a warning to everyone who thinks that a little loss of liberty here and there for security can’t ever lead to as Rand put it “bloody ruins and concentration camps”. All the Collectivist out there should listen to this song and think long and hard about the Increasing size of the Police State in America, the Drones spying on peaceful individuals, the groping and naked scans of individuals by the TSA, the invasiveness of the IRS knowing all your banking information, what jobs you’ve ever held and how much you make, the prosecution of the Drug War in which millions of individuals enjoying marijuana are thrown in jail, who a lot of them leave after their stint harden criminals, the endless wars overseas, the drones killing hundreds of innocent individuals around the world and the war on terror at home where now  targeting Americans on America soil for assassination is now the law.

The Song “Gas Man Cometh” focuses on what happens when the State shows its true colors. One of the Lines that I love is “When Power is threatened Life is Cheap”. That sums up the Collectivist Philosophy.  In the last century 170 million individuals were killed by their own collectiivst governments. I don’t think that can be repeated enough. That is not a fluke. If a government is based upon the ideology of Collectivism it leads eventually to the deaths of millions. That is not an aberration. The massacres of the 20th century were not the result of a few bad men who gained the reigns of power, which is the excuse the current crop of collectivists use to rationalize the bloodshed.Mass murder is a fundamental calling card of Collectivism. Life is cheap. The Individual is nothing. The only thing that matters is who has the power to force others to do what they want. And if any individual goes against the “majority” then they are killed in every way conceivable from starvation to what Jeffrey Lewis sings about in “Gasman Cometh” in Gas Chambers.

The song starts off with an eery train whistle and a woman saying “Train now standing on Platform four”. It is an illusion to the cattle cars that Jews, Gypsies, Gays and other undesirables were forced into to before being sent to their deaths at the concentration camps in Nazis Germany. If that doesn’t give you chills I don’t know what will.

If you want to watch Jeffrey Lewis Perform it here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLVrjfb1L94

The train now standing on platform four,

What will you do when the gas taps turn?

Where will you be when the bodies burn?

Will you just watch as the cattle trucks roll by?

Pretend it isn’t happening? Turn a blind eye?

See the army convoys quietly passing by?

Heard the helicopters in your little bit of sky?

Have you seen the squad cars packed with boys in blue?

Have you ever wondered what they’re there to do?

Pictures in the paper of soldiers in the street,

Pictures in the history books of rotting human meat.

Auschwitz’s now a tourist spot for the goggle eyed to pry,

Still in working order just for you and I.

Photos of the victims, of gas, of gun, of bomb,

Inheritance of violence in the bookshelves of your home.

Don’t wait for it to come to you, cos come it surely will,

The guardians of the state are trained to search, destroy and kill.

There’s people sitting at this moment, fingers on the trigger,

There’s loyalty and royalty to make their violence figure.

Allegiance to the flag, they say, as they lock the prison door,

Allegiance to normality, that’s what lobotomies are for.

God, queen and country, they say we’ve got the choice,

Free speech for all if you’ve got no voice.

Propaganda on the airwaves, here’s the way to live,

Not for you and me the alternative.

The look for peace in Ireland with a thousand squaddy boys,

Torture in their mental homes is another of their ploys.

They’ll keep us all in line, by christ, they’ll keep us on our toes,

But if we stand against their power, we’ll see how violence grows.

Read it in the paper about rebellious youth,

But it’s them that are so violent, it’s them that hide the truth.

Stay in line, or pay the cost,

Do you think they care when another life’s lost?

Auschwitz’s now a tourist spot for the goggle eyed to pry,

Still in working order just for you and I.

To ashes at Auschwitz it’s just a small leap,

From coshes at Southall, life is cheap.

Don’t think that they won’t do it, cos they already do,

But this time ’round the pawns are me and you

The song is written to protest the English oppressive rule of Ireland. and what happened when people spoke up about it. But for me it is a warning to all of us who love liberty that anyone who has the reigns of power and wants to tell you how to live, will resort to violence to control you and like the songs says “Auschwitz is just a small leap”.

Government is force. Anything that Government does it does at the barrel of a gun. If you don’t think so don’t pay your income tax. Ignore all the threatening letters from the IRS. Then close your bank accounts so they can’t levy them and quit your job so they can’t garnish your wages. Then when they come to seize your property to pay what they say you owe tell them “NO”. What do you think will happen? The armed guardians of the State will proceed to arrest you. If you resist they will kill you!!!

Auschwitz did happen. Regular everyday people were the “gasmen” who put the individuals on Cattle Cars, pushed them into the gas chambers and delivered the Zyklon B to murder them. Six million men women and children were killed in concentration camps because of a Collectivist Nation believed that only certain individuals had rights and those rights were determined by the majority and carried out by the ruling Elite, in this case the Nazi Party.

Six million people is more than live in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area which only has a population of 5.5 million. That gives some scale to the slaughtered that occurred not at the hands of one man, but by the hands of thousands of ordinary people who either turned a blind eye to the truth or bought into the propaganda or truly thought murdering these people was the right thing to do. No matter what their motivation or rational was it happened and it can happen again. But at the basis of all their rational is that only certain individuals have rights and that is determined by who wields power. They didn’t believe that all Individuals are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. We take that idea so much for granted. Just think how many people around the world have never heard those words yet alone lived under a government based upon that fundamental idea of individualism expressed by those beautiful words?

In the last century 170 million individuals were killed by Collectivist Governments around the world. These were their own people. That is more people than the current populations of Germany and France combined. Think about the murder of all the Germans living in Germany and all the French living in France. Wiped off the face of the Earth. That is how many citizens were killed by their own governments which were founded upon Collectivist principles. .

The Song “Gasman Cometh” is a warning to us all that The State will murder anyone who opposes it. That is the simple fact. The more Collectivist a State becomes the more Militarized and more murdering it carries out. I really like this song and I hope you check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLVrjfb1L94

I don’t know Jeffrey Lewis’ politics but I dig “Gasman Cometh” and “Time Trade”. They are both awesome. He has a lot of other great songs too. Check out his website and if he is in your city go check him out you won’t be disappointed. http://www.thejeffreylewissite.com/

I also like the whole idea of Anarcho-punk rock. I’ll be checking out more of that. Read up on the band Crass. They were it seems left leaning anarchists but they were still preaching pacifism and the anti-war message which we need as much of that as we can get today.
